The electric toothbrush is a small, useful, and relatively inexpensive gadget, but it requires periodic cleaning.
Here are some tips that will help the toothbrush do its job:
- The brush head is the part that does most of the work, so clean it often. Get a new brush head every 2 to 3 months, or sooner if the bristles fall out.
- Wash the toothbrush head before putting it back. (The manufacturer usually recommends this, but lots of people skip this step.) Most brushes are dishwasher safe, but it’s true that it is easy to damage the bristles in an automatic dishwasher.
- Brush your toothbrush. When you brush your toothbrush, it loosens the plaque and kills the bacteria that cause gum disease. If you don’t brush your brush, the brush head won’t work as effectively. (Remember that the brush head is the part that does the cleaning. The handle, where you hold the brush, is the part that does the spinning. The handle may get dirty, but it rarely needs cleaning.)
- The toothbrush handle is easy to keep clean. You can pour some baking soda onto a towel and rub the handle with it. The baking soda will help remove any bacteria that has gotten on the handle. Rinse it thoroughly before putting it back.
- An electric toothbrush is not meant to be waterproof, though. If you don’t clean it properly, it can rust. To clean it properly, first charge it, then run the brush for 30 seconds on low speed (the speeds available depend on the model).
Then rinse the brush with hot water (but no soap). If any debris remains on the brush, you can soak it in a container of white vinegar overnight. Then brush the brush with hot water and toothpaste.
Finally, rinse the brush with hot water and wipe it dry.
